This promises to be a stimulating and entertaining meeting, focusing on specific topics in depth. I urge you all to try to attend and spread the word to your colleagues.

Registrar and Fellow support to attend the meeting has been generously offered by The Gastroenterology Foundation and those wishing to apply for this are asked to contact Karin Fenton at kfenton@mweb.co.za

Future meetings

2011- European HPBA (EHPBA) Cape Town 12 – 16 April 2011, at the ICC
Congress Co-Chair Professor Martin Smith has put in a huge effort to arrange what will be a major international meeting here in South Africa. We are indeed fortunate to be able to host such an important event. The participation of HPBASA, ASSA, SAGES, SASES, TSSA, VSSA, SAGINS. SASA, and SASSIT will further ensure that this will be a landmark event for our Association and for academic medicine in our country.

Chronic Pancreatitis Patient Registry

You are invited to add patients with chronic pancreatitis to this Registry which has been developed with the generous support of Solvay Pharma and George Dempster of E2 Solutions. This is an exciting venture aimed at developing a comprehensive national database of patients with this disease which will provide opportunity for further academic initiatives. Other HPB diseases will be added to the Registry in future. The registry can be accessed via the www.hpbasa.co.za  website – registration is required and HPBASA or SAGES membership encouraged. A presentation on the Registry will be given at the October Spring Update meeting in Durban

Abbott Laboratories (Solvay)-HPBASA Travelling Fellowship

Following an initiative by Past-President Martin Smith, Abbott Laboratories (previously Solvay Pharma) has generously awarded an Annual Travelling Fellowship valued at R30 000.00 aimed at assisting HPBASA members to visit overseas units to further their knowledge of HPB disease. Interested members are urged to contact the Secretariat for further information. Applications for 2011 are invited.

Thus far no applications for 2010 have been received and instead, travel grants of R5000.00 were awarded to three members to help with registration fees for the IHPBA Congress held in Buenos Aires in April 2010.
I encourage you to spread the word about this Travelling Fellowship to juniors in any of the disciplines dealing with HPB disease.

Chronic Pancreatitis Guidelines
I am pleased to report that this recent HPBASA initiative is almost finalised. Under the chairmanship of Prof P Bornman, a committee made up of Johan Botha, Jose Ramos, Martin Smith, Schalk van der Merwe, Gill Watermayer and Chris Ziady, have prepared guidelines for the management of chronic pancreatitis for the benefit of doctors and funders alike. These are currently in the final phase of preparation and will be released in the near future. These will be presented in Durban and will also be published in the national medical press. The invaluable support of Abbott Laboratories (formerly Solvay Pharma) is much appreciated as is the hard work and efforts of the committee chairman and members.

Membership issues
You are urged to keep your annual contributions up to date to allow the Association to cover its running costs. Membership fees have been set at R350 per year for members and R200 for junior doctors. I urge you to encourage your colleagues who practice in the field of HPB disease to join this unique and exciting Association.
Please submit any suggestions and queries to the Secretariat or to me at jramos@wbs.co.za
